The corn bunting is gregarious, living in scattered flocks.
It has a remarkable beak which is strong and conical with the edge of the upper mandible curved inwards.
On the upper mandible, it has a "tooth" which fits into a notch in the lower mandible.
MORPHOLOGY / FLIGHT
Size 18 to 19cm - weight: 38 to 55g – life expectancy: can reach 10 years.
Extended undulations in long flight; dangling legs and heavy appearance in short flight.
HABITAT
The corn bunting chooses large open cultivated areas or hayfields.
It enjoys singing in high-up places but will also make do with bushes, power lines or fence posts.
FOOD
It feeds on seeds, grasses, leaves, etc., on the ground. Insects and spiders are caught when feeding juveniles.
NEST
The nest is built on the ground. It is made of grasses, rootlets and hair. The male visits 2 or 3 females.
1 to 2 clutches of 3 to 5 eggs.
