A shy species, difficult to see. In the presence of the female, the male
performs aerial parades which he accompanies
by beating his wings lightly.
MORPHOLOGY / FLIGHT
Length: 28 cm – weight: 100-180 g – longevity: 13 years
Light, airy woods, low-lying wooded areas, agricultural regions
Principally seeds which it finds on the ground.
Fragile nest made from twigs, situated in bushes, two metres above the ground.
Both male and female participate in an incubation of 14 days.
Hunting is permitted. Decline of 44% in the last decade.
Migratory or non-migratory
April - May - June - July - August - September
Species has greatly declined in France due to the birds being hunted around the Mediterranean and to the reduction in the number of hedges.
