Extremely shy during the day, it is a primarily semi-nocturnal bird which feeds at dusk.
MORPHOLOGY / FLIGHT
Length: 35-45 cm – weight : 370- 450 gr – longevity: 10 years
Its flight is direct and regular, hanging in the air before landing, but it prefers running to flying.
HABITAT
Dry and stony in an open environment. In stony fields, dry prairies, low-lying farmland, wasteland, moors.
FOOD
Insects, larvae, snails, small lizards and frogs, etc.
NEST
The nest is a simple hole in the ground.
Lays 1-3 eggs in April-May, then occasionally again in July-August. Incubation is from 25 to 27 days.
